Fatmir Hasani from the Party for Democratic Action, PDD warned that people from the southern Serbian Presevo Valley region, which has a majority Albanian population, are still facing old problems which are being exacerbated by worsening relations and everyday tensions between Belgrade and Pristina.

“We live blindfolded because of everything that has been said and published. And we don’t know anything [about the future],” Hasani told BIRN in an interview conducted via email.

Kosovo President Hashim Thaci recently proposed a resolution suggesting that three southern Serbian municipalities – Presevo, Bujanovac and Medvedja - should become part of Kosovo. The idea immediately sparked a new row between Belgrade and Pristina.

“As many rights as Serbs have in Kosovo, proportionate to the number of inhabitants, should also be given to the Albanians living in the Valley,” Nait Hasani from Thaci’s Democratic Party of Kosovo said during a Kosovo parliamentary session on July 2. A final vote on the resolution is still to be taken.
