On 4 April 2017, Center for Eurasian Studies (AVİM) hosted H.E. Deputy Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan Hekmat Khalil Karzai at the conference titled Afghanistan and the Political and Security Landscape in the Region.

H.E. Karzai has been serving as the Deputy Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan since 21 January 2015. Prior to this appointment, he chaired several national and international processes/forums, and engaged in various national processes with particular emphasis on the peace processes and youth empowerment. In July 2015, H.E. Hekmat Khalil Karzai led the Afghan delegations in the first face to face talks with the Taliban and at the Quadrilateral Coordination Group (Afghanistan, Pakistan, China and United States) meetings with a focus on creating an enabling environment for the Afghan peace process.  He is the Founder Director of the Centre for Conflict and Peace Studies (CAPS). H.E. Hekmat Khalil Karzai has written extensively on Afghanistan, security, peace and reconciliation and his articles have been translated into many languages.

At the presentation, H.E. Karzai spoke about the political changes in the regions surrounding Afghanistan and the emerging security landscape. H.E. Karzai discussed Afghanistan’s perspectives on the present and future opportunities and challenges in the region. H.E. Karzai also  talked about friendly relations between Turkey and Afghanistan, and mentioned Turkey’s contributions to Afghanistan in the fields of security and development.

The conference concluded with a Q&A session.
